High-Mileage Sierra Owners Search for Durability Limits

When a new generation of the GMC Sierra fullsize pickup heads into production, it will have already absorbed hundreds of thousands of miles of hauling, towing, use and abuse testing. It’s the kind of durability exam customers in the real world administer for years and even decades.

Tammie Roeber, Dave Cleveland and Don Impson are three of those customers. Together, their trucks represent more than 2 million miles and two-and-a-half decades of proven GMC engineering.

“I signed the papers on my new Sierra 3500HD one-ton pickup in 2006, hitched up a trailer, and have been on the road since,” said Roeber, who has recorded more than 1.2 million miles on the original Duramax diesel engine and Allison transmission in her GMC. Roeber makes a living transporting horses across the eastern United States. “From 30 below zero in Minnesota to 100 degrees in Miami,” she said.

“I had two Ford pickups prior to owning my GMC, but I was replacing a transmission every year. If that rate continued, I’d be through my sixth transmission with the miles I’ve put on the Sierra.”   Most of Roeber’s miles have been driven pulling trailers, including a 48-foot, 16,000-pound trailer holding as many as nine horses. She maintains her truck religiously, sticking to a 15,000-mile oil change schedule. At her pace, that’s just three weeks between service visits.

Among Roeber’s favorite features are the truck’s engine braking capability – she often encounters 6 percent to 7 percent grades that stretch for miles – that’s allowed her four-wheel disc brakes to last longer, as well as the comfortable crew cab. With most of her life lived on the road, the rear seat often doubles as a bed.

Dave Cleveland uses his 2002 Sierra 1500 extended cab to travel from his home near Chicago to trade shows as far away as Florida and Colorado. Between those travels and his daily 60-mile commute, he’s accumulated 420,000 miles over the past decade. The truck shares a driveway with his wife’s 2010 Sierra.

“This truck runs as good today as the day I bought it,” Cleveland said. “The engine and transmission are original. I haven’t even replaced the brake rotors or shocks. Other than a rear pinion gear replacement and regular oil changes, it’s just had one major tune-up at 200,000 miles.”

Don Impson, a semi-retired veterinarian in Arkansas, has stretched his miles out longer than the others. He started accumulating his 520,000 miles – mostly by making farm visits tending to animals in a three-county area around his home – when he bought his GMC pickup new in 1986.

“Everyone down around us owns trucks, but no one ever talks about this sort of mileage on one engine,” Impson said. In addition to the original engine, his manual transmission still has its original clutch. “I bought a red and white two-tone truck off the lot because the colors were done wrong for a local construction company, but it’s actually become somewhat of a calling card. Everyone knows my truck.”

“In 1995, I bought another GMC ¾-ton pickup truck thinking mine may quit on me,” he continued. “Man, how wrong I was. The 1995 truck has mostly sat while my ’86 continues to get the work done. We’re both getting older, but me and the truck may still be hankering to make a cross-country trip and I bet we could make it.”

Customers like these help GMC make advancements in durability by providing real-world test results.

“Customer stories are great to listen to, and they provide useful data for planning new trucks,” said Jim Mikulec, lead development engineer for Sierra Heavy Duty pickups. “We test our vehicles based on where and how our trucks are used to assure consumer demands are met. Vehicle testing takes us high in the mountains, low in the deserts, colder than -50 degrees in Canada and up past 120 degrees in Arizona.  These stories show that our diligence is paying off.”

Mikulec’s favorite testing involves driving Sierra 3500HD Duramax diesel trucks up Eisenhower Pass in Colorado with 20,000-pound trailers attached. “With the inclines and altitude, there’s no more demanding place to drive a truck and trailer. It’s a task to stay with traffic all the way to the top, and it has been satisfying seeing publications prove that GMC is the leader in that regard.”

In an August 2011 PickupTrucks.com test, a 2012 GMC Sierra 2500HD Diesel ascended Eisenhower Pass, the highest point on the U.S. Interstate System, faster than comparable Ford or Ram trucks.  It also performed better during the descent with its exhaust brake outperforming its competitors.

“Technology also allows us to get data more quickly than we could in the past,” added Mikulec. “In today’s labs, we can simulate stress tests and various weather changes to help refine frames, suspension components and cooling systems.”

Mikulec’s top tip for truck drivers looking to go the distance? “A truck is like a human body. It needs care, and the best way to ensure it lasts longer is regular preventative maintenance.”

Buick Riviera Rumored as GM Files for Trademark on Iconic Name

Buick is the latest brand to leave a breadcrumb trail for its future products by filing for a tradermark on May 3 to cover its Riviera moniker. While that doesn’t prove anything on its own, the company isn’t known for flippantly filing for trademarks on the off chance they might one day come true.

Instead, it seems more in line with the General Motors methodology to file when there’s a likely chance something might actually be produced (think “SS Performance”).

That’s why we’re left wondering what might be sitting up the secretive sleeves in the Buick offices. Winding back to 2007, Buick unveiled a Riviera concept at the Shanghai Motor Show, though it wasn’t ever green lit. It made an appearance again in 2008 at the Detroit Auto Show, but has since slipped into the depths of concept car limbo.

Our associates at GM Inside News learned last year that the company was considering a sporty coupe built on the rear-wheel drive Alpha platform, though such a car is unlikely until after 2015. It also possible that the front-drive Lambda platform could spawn something before that, but there isn’t any official word.

One way or another we’ll be keeping an eye out for further news on what could be another GM entrant to the sports coupe market in the next few years

Pack for that summer trip with ease thanks to the Cadillac SRX and it's Cargo Management System.

The summer road trip season is near, meaning millions of drivers are planning getaways – with lots of stuff. The Cadillac SRX crossover’s unique Cargo Management System is designed as an ideal companion for long weekends and driving vacations.

“We put a lot of thought into what kinds of items Cadillac customers would want to bring into the SRX and where they’d want to put them,” said Elizabeth Pilibosian, SRX chief engineer. “The philosophy was not just to maximize total space but to have a place for everything and everything in its place. That makes a huge difference on longer trips.”

The rear compartment Cargo Management System uses a segment-exclusive U-Rail track system with an adjustable cargo fence that segments the area to contain items of various sizes and restrict their movement when the vehicle is in motion. The fence is sturdy, but also easy to move around the U-shaped track to adjust to a variety of positions to suit a range of items and packing arrangements.

The cargo fence can be removed, retracted and conveniently secured beneath the load floor when not in use. An optional cargo net, organizer or area divider may be used in place of the tubular fence. Four steel loops positioned in each corner of the compartment provide convenient connection points for nets or bungee cords that a driver might bring into the vehicle.

The rear compartment’s load floor has a latch that reveals a waterproof bin, measuring 26 by 12 inches by eight inches deep. This easy-to-clean bin is ideal for storing damp or dirty items from a beach trip, or it can be used as a cooler, or to house smaller items under the floor and out of view. A smaller secondary bin holds the vehicle’s tire inflator kit that can be used as a pump for bike tires and beach toys depending on valve compatibility.

Flanking the main bin are two smaller discreetly covered compartments designed to be ideal for stowing small tools, such as a tire pressure gauge. Regular use maintains proper tire pressure, which can help maximize fuel economy.

A two-position cargo shade can be used to conceal the rear compartment when the hatch is closed.

In SRX’s passenger area are several additional storage areas. Each door has upper and lower bins, as does the glove compartment, which can cool fruit and beverages when the air conditioning is on. The center console offers an upper level for small items like an MP3 player or mobile phone, and a lower level for larger items.

The cup holders between the front seats are dual-level as well, with a retractable floor that lets the user go from a small coffee to a “grande” at the flip of a switch The false floor also creates a secret compartment that can hide a wallet or wristwatch.

In front of the cup holders is the SRX’s smallest bin, designed expressly to house mobile phones and sometimes known as the “phone throne.”

Open SRX’s rear programmable liftgate and more than 29 cubic feet of storage space behind the second row seating awaits, more than enough room for four rolling suitcases, sports equipment and sundries. With the 60/40 split rear seats folded flat, the cargo area grows to more than 61 cubic feet to accommodate items like a bike or baby stroller.

“We know that SRX customers are active people who value enriching experiences,” Pilibosian said. “They expect their journey to be just as enjoyable as their destination, and the SRX is tailored to meet their needs and exceed their expectations.”

The end of National Bike to Work Week draws near

With National Bike to Work Week coming to an end, how many days were you able to make it to work on two wheels rather than four? Would you be able to use your bicycle as your main source of transportation, or are you dependent upon your vehicle to get you from place to place?

GMC celebrates its 100th Birthday with the Sierra and Yukon Heritage Editions

It is no coincidence that the 2012 GMC Yukon, Yukon XL and Sierra Heritage Editions will debut at the New York Auto Show. A century ago, the GMC name first appeared on the front of a truck at this very same event.

Commemorative exterior badges on the doors of these special models feature the original GMC logo design that debuted on the 1912 range of models, which included gas- and electric-powered trucks designed for the most demanding among early drivers. The script is surrounded by the words "Heritage Edition."

2012 Heritage Editions will be offered on Sierra 1500 Crew Cab, Yukon and Yukon XL models in SLT trim. Three colors will be available – a new, exclusive Heritage Blue ($195), White Diamond ($995) or Onyx Black (no additional cost). Interior colors for the Yukon are Ebony and Light Tan.

Each Heritage Edition model offers its own differentiating content. The Sierra Heritage Edition full-size pickup includes:
- Unique "Heritage Edition" exterior badges
- Embroidered front floor mats
- Embroidered front headrests
- Chrome door handles, mirror caps and door moldings
- 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels
- Convenience package with rear park assist, adjustable pedals, Universal Home Remote, EZ-Lift locking tailgate and rear wheelhouse liners
- Rear-vision camera

The Yukon and Yukon XL full-size SUVs are equipped with:
- Unique "Heritage Edition" exterior badges
- Embroidered front floor mats
- Embroidered front headrests
- SLT-2 Equipment Package with 10-way leather memory seats, headed second-row seats with power release, power-operated liftgate and heated side mirrors
- Additional content – including 20-inch wheels – is optional

"The GMC brand always looks forward, but this day provides an opportunity to celebrate 100 years of the proud GMC name," said Tony DiSalle, U.S. vice president of GMC Marketing. "Sierra and Yukon are two of our longest-running and most-respected nameplates, so it makes sense to use them to represent our heritage."

GMC was formed in 1912 when the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company merged with two others – Reliance and Randolph – to become the brand known today for trucks, crossovers and SUVs. GMC is the second largest of the four General Motors brands. If it were a stand-alone manufacturer, it would be the 10th-largest automaker in the United States in terms of total vehicle sales in 2011.

GMC has manufactured trucks since 1902, and is one of the industry's healthiest brands. Innovation and engineering excellence is built into all GMC vehicles and the brand is evolving to offer more fuel-efficient trucks and crossovers, including the Terrain small SUV and Acadia crossover. GMC is the only manufacturer to offer three full-size hybrid trucks with the Yukon, Yukon Denali SUVs and the Sierra pickup. The new Sierra Heavy Duty pickups are the most capable and powerful trucks in the market.

Buick Buyers Responding to More Efficient Model Line

Buick’s ongoing renaissance is fueled by distinctive design, an inviting dealership experience and a focus on purposeful technologies like advanced four-cylinder engines and the new gas-saving eAssist powertrain.

Buick buyers appear to be noticing, and are rapidly moving to the brand’s more fuel-efficient models.

At the start of the 2012 model year last October, four-cylinder models represented 22 percent of Buick’s sales. In March, nearly half of all Buicks sold were powered by these smaller- displacement engines, many with EPA-estimated 30 mpg or more on the highway.

Buick retail sales in March were up 6 percent compared to the same month in 2011. The LaCrosse midsize luxury sedan remained the brand’s top-selling model and a record 26 percent of LaCrosses were sold with eAssist; nearly one in three LaCrosses sold in California had eAssist with an EPA-estimated 36 mpg on the highway.

Sales of the Verano luxury sedan, which launched in December 2011, passed 2,000 units per month for the first time. A total of 2,497 vehicles were sold in March. Verano was recently named one of Kelley Blue Book’s “10 Best Sedans Under $25,000” and is powered by a 2.4L four-cylinder rated at 32 mpg highway – better than the Acura TSX, Infiniti G25, and Lexus IS250.

“Customers want higher fuel economy without compromise and Buick offers just that,” said Brian Sweeney, vice president of Buick Sales and Service. “Among the models with four-cylinder engines are a LaCrosse with eAssist that offers fuel economy with great space and luxury and a Regal GS offeri ng responsible sport sedan performance.”

LaCrosse with eAssist uses a compact lithium-ion battery pack and small electric motor to aid the performance of a fuel-efficient 2.4L gas engine, while advanced start/stop technology allows the vehicle to operate on just electricity while at rest. It offers a 25 percent savings in fuel use versus the traditional four-cylinder it replaced in late 2011.

Regal GS uses a 2.0L turbocharged engine with the highest horsepower-per-liter ratio General Motors has ever produced. At 135 horsepower per liter, it is also the most power-dense engine ever certified by the Society of Automotive Engineers. The car’s 270-horsepower rating wouldn’t be possible without fuel-saving technologies like spark ignition direct injection and variable valve timing.

Among Buick’s other vehicles with four-cylinder engines are eAssist, Turbo, and base versions of the Regal luxury sport sedan. Next year, the new Encore luxury crossover goes on sale with an efficient 1.4L turbocharged engine.

Buick’s increase in fuel-efficient vehicles contributed to an overall trend across GM. In March, the company sold a record 100,000 vehicles that get an EPA estimated 30 mpg or better on the highway.
